Chelsea head into this new season with a lot of optimism brewing around Stamford Bridge.
The Blues are the World Champions after their triumph at the Club World Cup over the summer, and they’ll be hoping to follow that up with more domestic and continental success.
Speaking on TNT Sports, Joe Cole has been discussing Chelsea’s chances in the Champions League this season, and he expressed some concerns about the Blues’ defence.
Cole says Levi Colwill is a top player, but Colwill has gone down with a serious injury, while he also noted that while Wesley Fofana is a top player, he can’t be relied on due to his injury issues.
Ian Wright has said similar about Fofana in the past.

Chelsea can’t rely on Wesley Fofana
Cole spoke about Chelsea’s defence ahead of what could be a tough Champions League campaign.
The pundit says that while Chelsea have some solid personnel in Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana, there are issues here.
Fofana has had injury issues throughout his career, and Cole says that the Frenchman simply can’t be relied on at this point.
“Levi, Levi at the end of last season was brilliant. You know centre-halves mature later, and it looked like something clicked with him. Fofana, you can’t rely on him because of injuries, although he is a top player, but you need to improve that area of the pitch,” Cole said.
Wesley Fofana’s potential was massive
As Cole says, Fofana isn’t a player Chelsea can necessarily rely on all the time, and that is such a shame.
Indeed, Fofana had massive potential earlier in his career, as Kasper Schmeichel said.
“Wes, what a guy, I love him. He came to us relatively unknown from St Ettiene, but he was like a big kid, very smiley, very chatty, and then he played and you were like ‘oh wow, ok this boy has something.’,” Schmeichel said.
“He’s honestly a great kid, another one with a high workrate as well, no surprise he’s gone on to be what he is and he has the potential to be what he wants to be.”
Sadly, that potential has been halted by injuries, and while Fofana is still a great footballer, he’s not been able to kick on in the way he perhaps would have hoped since joining Chelsea.
