Chelsea need to be busy in the summer transfer window.
Indeed, Chelsea looked like title contenders earlier this season, but, in recent weeks, the Blues’ form has seriously dipped.
Despite spending billions in recent years, this squad does need a bit more quality adding.
Chelsea need a new goalkeeper, while Ian Wright wants Chelsea to sign a new centre-back too.
However, the main crux of the problem at Chelsea is the lack of experience in this young side.
Speaking on The Dressing Room Podcast, Joe Cole has been discussing Chelsea’s summer priorities, and he’s made an interesting claim about who his former club should sign.

Joe Cole says Chelsea should sign Kevin De Bruyne
Cole was discussing Kevin De Bruyne’s future after it was announced the Belgian will leave Manchester City.
De Bruyne has been linked to MLS, but Cole reckons that the £54m midfielder would be perfect to Chelsea due to his quality and his experience as a winner.
“Do you know who he’s perfect for?” Cole asked.
“Do you know what? Like Chelsea. I know he’s been there before and he, you know, I’m just thinking.
“You’re saying to, you’re not for us for the next two years and what we want to do. Well, you’re on a free, you can go anywhere you want.
“And I’m saying, and I’m saying, and this ain’t me trying to, you know, if I’m Chelsea and I’m sitting around with him, I’m going, we need experienced players, like Kevin De Bruyne, he’s been injured a bit, but we, what he gives the changing room as a winner, as a leader, we might only need him for 30 games a season.”
Players to have re-signed for Chelsea
De Bruyne returning to Chelsea would be quite the story, but it’s not unheard of for the Blues to do a deal like this.
Indeed, Chelsea have never been afraid to bring back a former player, and the Blues have also been linked with Marc Guehi recently.
Chelsea have re-signed a number of their former players over the years, and a number of those players have been success stories.
| Players to re-sign for Chelsea | Year left | Year re-signed |
| David Luiz | 2014 | 2016 |
| Nemanja Matic | 2011 | 2014 |
| Didier Drogba | 2012 | 2014 |
| Graeme Le Saux | 1993 | 1997 |
| Romelu Lukaku | 2014 | 2021 |
De Bruyne left Chelsea in 2014 having only played a handful of games for the London club, but, via The Guardian, the midfielder maintained there’s no hard feelings between the two parties.
“I don’t think they have regrets: they’ve won two league titles since I’ve been gone, so they’ve done fairly well. That’s the way it goes, it’s a business,’ De Bruyne said.
“At that point it was a good decision for me to go and maybe for them it was also good to let me go. There’s no bad feeling at all. It’s just part of life and you need to grow up.”
De Bruyne, of course, will know Enzo Maresca well from his time at City working under Pep Guardiola, so, who knows? Perhaps this is a deal we could see come to fruition.
