Joe Cole delivers verdict on West Ham after defeat to Manchester City

Joe Cole believes that West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini needs to start fresh with his players next week, as they suffered a beating at the hands of defending champions Manchester City on Saturday.

The Hammers commenced their Premier League season with a 5-0 defeat against Manchester City, who have a formidable record at the London Stadium.

Raheem Sterling netted a hat-trick to get his season up and rolling, while Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero were also on the scoresheet.

There has been a lot of optimism around West Ham following some impressive summer transfers, but they were blown away by a clinical Manchester City team.

Ex-West Ham player and now pundit Cole has urged Pellegrini to start fresh next weekend when his team travel to Brighton for a second league fixture.

“They looked good in spells throughout the game, but this Man City team just steamrolled them,” Cole said on BT Sport 1 channel (2:45pm, 10 August).

“I think with the manager he’s just got to say write that one off, we go again next week, our season starts next week.”

TBR’s View:

West Ham can’t dwell on their defeat to Manchester City for too long, as they aren’t going to face any better all season.

There were brief positive moments for the Hammers fans to enjoy with new signing Sebastien Haller showing signs he can lead the line well, but they just couldn’t handle a ruthless opponent.

Pellegrini’s team lost their opening four league fixtures last season before the turnaround started, something they can’t afford a repeat of if they are serious about challenging for European spots.

Manchester City have shown they are capable of thrashing any team on their day, so West Ham need to quickly brush themselves off before Brighton.
