Olivier Giroud scored a perfect hat-trick and then a penalty on Wednesday night as Chelsea cruised to a 4-0 win over Chelsea in Spain – and Joe Cole has told BT Sport that Arsenal fans will be kicking themselves over letting him go.
With Chelsea having already qualified, Frank Lampard rested a number of his first-team stars in Spain – making nine changes from the team that drew 0-0 with Tottenham at the weekend. Giroud, 34, was handed a start.
It was only the Frenchman’s second start of the season, with eight of his 10 outings coming from the bench. However, the target man took full advantage – scoring all four of Chelsea’s goals in a comprehensive victory.
He curled a left-footed effort home first, before chipping in with his right to make it two. Giroud completed his hat-trick by heading home N’Golo Kante’s cross, and then nabbed a penalty. Cole reckons Arsenal will be gutted.

“(He was) Faultless, flawless,” Cole told BT Sport – as per Football London. “We had a lovely montage of him playing but he has gobbled it up with all his goals, we can only show his goals.
“If you are an Arsenal fan sitting at home, you will be thinking ‘how have we let him go?’. He is such a great professional, such a great player. He affects the game and he has given Frank a massive headache, a good headache.”
TBR’s view – Arsenal could do with Giroud right now
Giroud’s four goals come at a time when Arsenal are really struggling in front of goal. Having sold Giroud to Chelsea for £15million (Football London) in January 2018, the Gunners have failed to replace him properly.
Now, Mikel Arteta’s side are struggling in front of goal. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has not been the same player since signing a new contract, while Alexandre Lacazette is just as inconsistent as the north London side as a whole.
The Gunners, and Arteta, would surely love Giroud right now.
