Joe Cole admits to u-turn on Leeds star Kalvin Phillips
Joe Cole has told the All To Play For Podcast that he has performed a u-turn in his opinion of Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips. Cole, in a previous BT Sport programme, left Phillips out of his England squad to take to Euro 2020 and admitted that he was unconvinced. That was, before Sunday.
Phillips, 25, earned the man-of-the-match award for his dominating performance in midfield. Not only did he get the better of the likes of Marcelo Brozovic, Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic, but Phillips also provided the game-changing moment – creating Raheem Sterling’s goal.
Speaking after Sunday’s 1-0 win over Croatia, ex-England, Chelsea and West Ham star Cole said that he was initially unconvinced about Phillips. He did not know enough about the Leeds star’s character but following on from Sunday, Cole stated that he has now been enlightened to his qualities.
“Phillips is one I questioned. I really like him. I wondered whether it might be a big jump because I didn’t know much about the lad’s character. But I trust Gareth, Gareth knows. He was running forward, physical,” Cole said. “It was a masterstroke by Gareth. He has got to start against Scotland.”
Does Leeds ace Phillips start for England against Scotland, as Cole claims?
Surely, he deserves his spot? However, Gareth Southgate might look to keep Phillips fresh – and use him when needed. Realistically, England might look to deploy more attacking players against a Scotland side that should beat. Jack Grealish, Marcus Rashford or Jadon Sancho could come in.
It might see Phillips drop out – given that Declan Rice is absolutely nailed on. Then, he might feature against the Czech Republic. Either way, Phillips has certainly done enough to show Southgate that he deserves to start.
