Everton made some eye-catching signings this summer. Big money was spent on the likes of Yerry Mina and Richarlison. Meanwhile, they also snapped up bargains in the form of Lucas Digne, Bernard and Andre Gomes. All in all, it was a decent summer for business at Goodison Park.
However, another new arrival that is certainly less high profile is also impressing at the club.
Everton snapped up Portuguese under-21 international Joao Virginia in the summer from Arsenal on an undisclosed fee.
The 18-year-old was immediately out into the Everton under-23 squad to work under David Unsworth. It did not take a long for fans to see what he was capable of. He featured against both Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers in Premier League 2 this season, securing clean sheets in both games.
Since then, youngster Joe Hilton has been the second strings number one keeper. That’s because Virginia has now been promoted to training with the Everton first-team on a regular basis as the club’s new third-choice stopper.
That is a brilliant impact from the player in such a short period of time at Finch Farm.
Everton fans are fed up of seeing Maarten Stekelenburg come in for Jordan Pickford when their undisputed number one is out of action. But in Virginia, it appears they have a talent ready to put pressure on the number two.
Everton fans will hope he keeps up this development and can be a long-term option in the first-team.
