Joao Palhinha has been speaking about why Tottenham Hotspur signed Xavi Simons, and he’s been super impressed by Spurs’ latest addition.

Simons started in Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 win over Villarreal in what proved to be a rather tricky clash for the North London club.

Lucas Bergvall’s deflected cross proved to be the only goal of the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but Thomas Frank will be delighted with the three points.

Joao Palhinha was asked about how Simons has been getting on at Tottenham, and the Portuguese star is a big fan.

Joao Palhinha hails the quality of Xavi Simons after Tottenham beat Villarreal

Joao Palhinha has hailed the quality of Xavi Simons after Tottenham defeated Villarreal and believes the Dutch international brings great competition to the squad.

The North London club now have a plethora of attacking options out wide, with the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Simons, Wilson Odobert, Brennan Johnson and Mathys Tel.

Palhinha told the media: “A lot of quality, offensively, for sure, he will bring a lot of things. He’s a really young player with a lot of talent. I think he will help us a lot in key moments.

“It’s one more player to bring competition in for the squad, because I think when you have so many top players in the squad, it’s going to be much more competitive for the places.

“I think in each position we have top players, and I don’t just mean the team that starts games, but also the players who sometimes aren’t in the starting lineup. I think anyone can play.

“I think when you sign these kinds of players, it’s because they will bring a lot of good things, and it’s a young talent and will help him to improve, and he will improve on the pitch to win games.”

Simons played on the left for Tottenham, although the 22-year-old seemed to struggle to really impact the game from out wide.

Frank admitted Simons and Spence weren’t ‘in sync’ down the left, which could force him to consider moving the Dutch forward into a more central role.

Xavi Simons explains why he signed for Tottenham

Simons admitted that Tottenham’s squad and coach are the reasons why he signed for the club.

The Dutch international claims that even after a fortnight as a Spurs player, he can already feel the unity in the squad and the impact Frank is having.

Simons said: “If I’m honest with you, that’s why I signed here, the coach has had a big impact on the group and obviously, it’s my second week here, I can feel that the group is really tight and together – that’s really positive.”

The youngster will be hoping to make it three starts on the bounce for Spurs when they travel to the South Coast on Saturday to face Brighton.
