Joao Mario lauds Ivan Perisic on Instagram after Croatia win at World Cup

Joao Mario was amongst the players to laud Ivan Perisic on Instagram after the Tottenham Hotspur star helped Croatia finish third at the World Cup on Saturday.

Croatia’s remarkable record at the tournament continued this year. Since gaining independence in 1991, the country has been at six tournaments. And on the three occasions they have got out of the group, they have gone on to make the semi-final.

They were not quite able to finish as runners-up like four years ago. However, their 2-1 win over Morocco earned them the bronze medal.

And Perisic played his role in the victory. The Spurs wide-man provided the assist for the opening goal, finding Josko Gvardiol with an outstanding glancing header.

Perisic missed out on making his own piece of history at the tournament. Had he scored again, the 33-year-old would have become his country’s all-time leading goalscorer at World Cups. He has previously scored six times.

Nevertheless, he was clearly delighted on helping his nation take third place. And following his post on Instagram, a number of players responded with messages of congratulations, with former West Ham loanee Joao Mario – who Perisic played alongside at Inter – sending one of the best replies…

It is remarkable to see how important Perisic remains at this stage of his career, for club and country. He turns 34 early next year. And yet, there seems to be no reason why he cannot continue for several years yet.

It does not feel out of the question to suggest that he could be playing for Croatia in 2026. And that is only good news for Tottenham.

He is a fantastic professional with so much to give. Signing him on a free transfer was a real coup for Antonio Conte.
