Jimmy Walker has told Love Sport Radio that he believes Tottenham Hotspur have got to orchestrate a deal to sign Chelsea target man Olivier Giroud, claiming the French forward is like Chelsea legend Didier Drogba.
The Independent claims 33-year-old Giroud is open to a move to remain in London and swap Chelsea for Tottenham, despite his Arsenal past which saw him pull on the red and white Gunners strip for five and a half years.
The France international has plummeted to third-choice striker behind Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi at Stamford Bridge, while Spurs need a striker given Harry Kane is injured with a torn hamstring.
Former Tottenham goalkeeper Walker has urged Spurs to sign Giroud with talks said to be ongoing, after a move to Inter Milan fell through. Walker compared Giroud to Chelsea great Drogba – and reckons he would be willing to play back-up to Kane.
“Someone like Giroud would be great. He’s a top striker, and he wouldn’t mind playing second fiddle to Kane – he would know his role. He’s one they should look at, because he knows how to play up top on his own,” Walker said.
“He’s like Drogba – he can hold the ball up, win headers, link the play and be a real focal point for the side. I can’t see anyone coming in for £50m and being a real top player, but Giroud could do a job for Spurs so maybe he’s one to get over the line”.
TBR’s view – Giroud the best option in a difficult market
With only a number of strikers available as we enter the final 24 hours of the window, Chelsea’s £18million signing (Sun) Giroud is probably the best Tottenham can hope for between now and 11pm on Friday.
Willian Jose, Krzysztof Piatek, Islam Slimani and many more strikers have been linked with Spurs, as has Giroud. Of those options, Giroud has enormous Premier League experience. Although 33, he is the best option to act as cover for Kane.
