Jim Ratcliffe thinks really highly of 48-year-old coach as Manchester United mull Erik ten Hag’s future

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is under pressure going into the final games of the season as new part-owner Jim Ratcliffe mulls over making a change.

Ten Hag just does not seem to be able to get things consistently right at United and the midweek loss to Chelsea has once again added further pressure to the situation.

The Dutchman has tried numerous tactics to win everyone over since coming in. He managed Cristian Ronaldo out of the club, while he’s tried his best to win over the likes of Marcus Rashford, who continues to struggle.

But with just a few games of the season left, Ten Hag finds himself looking over his shoulder.

And according to journalist Ben Jacobs, should Ten Hag go, then it’s a former Chelsea manager who Ratcliffe could well turn to as his replacement.

Manchester United to consider ‘special’ manager as Ten Hag’s replacement

Jacobs, who was speaking to GiveMeSport, has suggested that a number of names will be on United’s list when it comes to replacing Ten Hag.

However, he has suggested that there’s one man who might stand above everyone due to impressing INEOS and Jim Ratcliffe in the past.

And that man is former Chelsea boss, Graham Potter.

Lauded by Pep Guardiola for his ‘outstanding‘ work at Brighton, Potter is believed to have impressed Ratcliffe and co previously.

“If Manchester United have to make a change or decide to make a change, they will have a plan. This is why we have a lot of names linked. You start with a long list. Of those names, I think many are other available or sought-after managers in the market currently. A few left-field, younger, or less proven names are doing well, but it would be a big step up to go to Manchester United,” Jacobs said.

“One is Graham Potter, who couldn’t handle the Chelsea dressing room for various reasons, perhaps some not in his control, but is still highly thought of after his time at Brighton. INEOS liked Potter with a view to Nice long before the investment was completed at Manchester United, and that’s why he’s been linked.”

Graham Potter not right for Old Trafford

If Ratcliffe does go and make a change he needs to go and get someone who fans will immediately take to and be onside with.

With Potter, given the disaster he endured at Chelsea, you get the impression United fans would be on the back foot a touch with his appointment.

There are other names out there for United to go for. As one of the biggest clubs in the world, they should be able to attract most big names in the industry.

So, while Potter might have a lot of credentials and be in favour with some, it might take someone with that bit more experience or stature to handle replacing Ten Hag.
