Former Motherwell player Jim Paterson has suggested that his old side should make a move to sign Rangers’s £1 million winger Jamie Murphy during the January transfer window, in comments reported by the Daily Record.
Murphy’s future at Ibrox looks to have a major question mark hanging over it. After enjoying a promising loan spell, his first full season following his permanent move was plagued by injury.

He is back playing. But he has only made two first-team appearances for Steven Gerrard’s side this season. Both of those games came back in October.
And with the January window now just a couple of weeks away, Murphy’s former Well teammate Paterson urged Stephen Robinson to try and land the 30-year-old on loan.

“You knew Murph’s qualities right away when he was coming through,” he said, as reported by the Daily Record. “He was absolutely rapid and did a great job for Motherwell.
“He’s a player that would really help the squad when they are under pressure in games with all the experience he has went on to get. Aside from that, he’s an attacking threat that can bolster the game. If they want to bolster the squad in January he’s a great signing.”
Unfortunately for Murphy, it looks unlikely that he will get back into the Rangers side on a regular basis. So, if they cannot agree a permanent deal elsewhere, a loan exit could be an incredibly smart move.
Murphy will get the chance to show what he can do. An amazing stint out on loan may force Gerrard into a rethink. But it seems more likely that that may convince another club to make a permanent bid in the summer.
And it is not out of the question for Murphy to potentially help Rangers’s title bid if Motherwell did make a move. Well are comfortably inside the top six, so there may be two chances to try and hurt Celtic.
