Jetro Willems is looking like an excellent signing by Newcastle United early doors.

The Netherlands international joined in the summer on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt, but his signing was fairly low key as fans vented their frustrations over the Mike Ashley-Rafa Benitez situation.

There was very little fanfare over the 25-year-old’s move, but as he continues to get to grips with the Premier League, it is becoming clear that the Magpies have landed a very talented full-back amid all the chaos.

Willems has now established himself in the starting XI, making the most of the injury picked up by Matt Ritchie in August.

He’s now started the last four Premier League games, and seven of the last eight.

He seems extremely well suited to playing as a wing-back, and there’s a chance he could be Newcastle best left-sided defender since Jose Enrique.

Left-back has been a problem position for United for a number of years at St. James’ Park, but in Willems they seem to really have a player on their hands.

Willems’ marauding style has really endeared him to the Toon Army faithful early doors, and he has every chance to become a cult hero in the same way Enrique did during his four years with the club.

It’s been 10 years since the Spaniard left the club – perhaps it’s about time Newcastle had a player capable of holding a candle to him.
