Jesse Lingard delivers three-word Instagram verdict on Manchester City star

John Stones made up for his error during England’s 2-1 win over Poland as he brilliantly assisted Harry Maguire to score the winner at Wembley – and Jesse Lingard has sent a three-word message to the Manchester City defender.

With the scoreline reading 1-0 to England after Harry Kane had converted the penalty Raheem Sterling won in the first half, City’s in-form defender Stones gave the ball away on the edge of his own area. Jakub Molder converted.

Immediately, it brought back memories of the old Stones, who would frequently lose possession in defence and try to overplay. But the City defender, buoyed by his recent form, instantly put things right with an excellent assist.

A deep corner to the back post looked as though it would be too long, but Stones galloped high into the air and perfectly headed the ball back into the area for Maguire to lash home a half volley. Stones posted on Instagram.

Had England lost to Stones’ mistake, the headlines would surely have been that the ex-Everton defender had not learnt from his previous lapses in concentration. What impressed was his mentality, overcoming it immediately.

Manchester United loanee Lingard, who has resurrected his England career with a loan spell at West Ham alongside Declan Rice, reacted to Stones’ Instagram post – delivering a three-word verdict on the City defender.
