Jermaine Jenas urged Tottenham to sign player in 2019, now Mourinho reportedly wants him

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly added AFC Bournemouth star David Brooks to a five-man shortlist ahead of the summer window – and Jermaine Jenas had previously urged Spurs to sign the Welshman in 2019.

Brooks, 23, managed just nine appearances during 2019-20 after a long-term ankle injury. However, the season before he had scored seven goals and created five more in 30 Premier League appearances. He has a contract until the summer of 2022.

The Evening Standard have claimed that Brooks is one of five players being targeted by Spurs. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Kim-min Jae, Timothy Castagne and Callum Wilson are also being linked with a move to the north London club.

Due to injury, Brooks has failed to show why he deserves a move to a big club this summer – but last season, he certainly proved his worth. An £11.5million (Sky Sports) signing, it remains to be seen how much he will cost.

Back in 2019, former Tottenham midfielder Jenas urged Spurs to complete a move and sign the winger – claiming the Welsh ace would be “perfect” for the north London club, which may still ring true given Spurs have qualified for the Europa League.

“David Brooks will hopefully go somewhere like Tottenham; I think that’s a perfect fit for him,” Jenas told Goal in February 2019. “He’s also the perfect fit for the club. He would get game time so it would be nice to see him at Tottenham.”

TBR’s view – Brooks in, but who should leave to make room?

Ryan Sessegnon needs game time to further his development. Staying at Tottenham will stunt his enormous potential, and joining a Premier League side on loan is ideal. Erik Lamela has not done enough of late, and he too should go.

Lucas Moura should stay, but has struggled of late. Spurs need a player that is happy to play on the counter and can conjure magic out of nothing and Brooks is capable of doing that – but he needs game time. The Europa League is ideal.
