Jermaine Jenas suggests Liverpool should rarely-seen Arsenal player

Jermaine Jenas has suggested on BT Sport that Liverpool could be wise to look at Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi.

The champions roared back into form last night by beating Tottenham 3-1 to claim a first Premier League win this year.

It wasn’t all sweetness and light for Jurgen Klopp though.

He joins Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez on the list of unavailable centre-backs, with Fabinho also missing out last night too.

The latest setback leaves Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips as the only recognised central defenders in Klopp’s ranks.

As a result, the club could be forced to rethink their original plan to not pursue a centre-back this month.

Jenas was covering the game on BT Sport and he made the suggestion that Mustafi might do a job.

Liverpool were reportedly keen to add Sokratis to their ranks earlier this month before he signed for Olympiacos (Daily Mail).

Now Jenas thinks his former teammate could be ideal for the Reds.

He told BT Sport: “Let’s just say that stopgap was Sokratis who came in – or Mustafi. A centre-half out there who’s not getting a game. Are Liverpool fans going to be happy about it?”

The German World Cup-winning enforcer isn’t getting a game at Arsenal and looks set to walk away when his £90,000-a-week contract ends in the summer.

As a result, it would be a no-brainer for him to link up with his compatriot, Klopp, should he make the call this weekend.

Mustafi hasn’t always covered himself in glory at Arsenal but ultimately Liverpool aren’t in a position where they can be too picky.

The 28-year-old has played 102 Premier League games, however, and he could prove a good addition until the end of the season.
