Jermaine Jenas suggests Liverpool could become interested in Tottenham midfielder

Jermaine Jenas has told the Daily Mirror that he believes Liverpool are just one of a number of sides that could become interested in Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Christian Eriksen, if he remains available on a free next summer.

Eriksen, 27, is currently in the final months of his Tottenham contract – one that will expire at the end of the season. He is allowed to talk to foreign clubs from January 1 under the Bosman ruling, before being able to leave Spurs for nothing in June.

Many have criticised the Danish playmaker for his perceived lack of effort this season. The former Ajax star has not closed down as much as the likes of Harry Kane or Son Heung-min, and has left Serge Aurier exposed, especially at Liverpool.

Former Spurs midfielder Jenas has claimed that Eriksen is likely to sit tight until the summer and leave on a free, which would see him pick up big wages as is the way with free transfers. Jenas reckons Liverpool could be tempted to sign Eriksen.

“I think the club were happy to let him leave but they just didn’t get the figure that they wanted or Christian didn’t get the club that he wanted,” Jenas said. “If I was Eriksen and the bid didn’t come in that I wanted, I would sit tight, I wouldn’t rush.

“Not only can I move for free in the summer, but that brings in Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, all the big hitters, Man Utd, even Liverpool. On top of that you have the huge windfall of wages.”

TBR’s view – Tottenham fans must remember Eriksen’s contribution

Yes, the midfielder did state in the summer he was looking for a new challenge and it is clear as day that he wants to leave Spurs. But Eriksen is now in his seventh season at Spurs following his £11.5million (BBC) move from Ajax.

Indeed, he enjoyed six stellar seasons with the north London club and has had a hand in a hug 154 goals during his 290 appearances. Scoring 67 times, Eriksen has laid on 87 assists – meaning he contrubites one goal in less than every two games.

Spurs fans must remember and applaud the Eriksen they had, rather than taint his seven-year stay in north London by criticising him for wanting to leave the club.
