Jermaine Jenas suggests he got it wrong on Newcastle ace who seemed ‘done and dusted’

Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles has been praised by Jermaine Jenas for his “remarkable” return to prominence.

Jenas, speaking on TNT Sport, says those who felt the Magpies defender was “done and dusted at Newcastle” have been proven wrong.

Lascelles has been with Newcastle through thick and thin. He joined back in 2014 from Nottingham Forest and has made 237 appearances for the Magpies.

Last season, the 30-year-old struggled for game time, but this term, an injury to Sven Botman gave the Newcastle veteran the opportunity to stake a claim.

Lascelles has made the most of his chance and has been one of the Magpies’ best performers since returning to the fold in the League Cup win over Manchester City.

That was his first start for Newcastle since March and now he’ll be looking to lead the Magpies out for their Champions League meeting with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

Jenas, who like Lascelles moved from Forest to Newcastle in his career, loves what he’s seeing from the Magpies skipper.

“One of the biggest pros when it comes to defensive players would be Lascelles in terms of his form,” said Jenas. “I think what he has done this season so far is not much short of remarkable.

“A player that everyone thought was done and dusted at Newcastle has come back and really shown some top-level form that Howe can really lean on.”

Jamaal Lascelles a real ambassador for Newcastle

It’s wonderful to see Lascelles loving life at Newcastle after being out of contention for pretty much the entirety of last season.

The £55,000-a-week star (Salarysport) has improved so much in such a short space of time and now he’s reaping the rewards.

Not only that, but his character and attitude at the club have been exemplary throughout his time at St James’ Park.

Let’s hope Lascelles can lead his charges to silverware glory this season. He’s a wonderful ambassador for the club.
