Jermaine Jenas says Tottenham player looked ‘angry’ after Jose Mourinho decision

Jermaine Jenas claimed during BT Sport’s (21:17pm) commentary of Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Royal Antwerp on Thursday that Harry Winks looked ‘angry’ when he came off – as the midfielder walked straight down the tunnel.

Winks, 24, has fallen down the pecking order this season, with Jose Mourinho bringing in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to sit in front of the defence. The summer signing has arguably been one of the Premier League’s best additions.

It has seen England midfielder Winks start just three of Tottenham’s 11 Premier League games – failing to feature in Tottenham’s last six league games, and being left out of the entire squad in all four of those matches.

Ex-Spurs midfielder Jenas was on co-commentary duties during Thursday night’s win, as Spurs finished top of Group J. He watched Bale and Winks go off after 57 minutes, and suggested the latter was fuming with the decision.

“If I’m Gareth Bale, I am disappointed that I’m coming off in this game after hitting that free-kick. Harry Winks as well, he doesn’t look happy. Straight down the tunnel. I think Jose wants this game done and dusted,” Jenas said.

“The Winks decision was a bit harsh, not sure what more he could have done in the game. I could see the look on his face when he came off, and he looked unhappy. He has every right to feel that way. He looked angry.

TBR’s view – Should Winks consider a January exit from Spurs?

While Bale will have been disappointed not to have got more than just 57 minutes, Winks – as Jenas says – has every right to be even more frustrated. The midfielder was probably one of Tottenham’s best performers on the night.

But with Moussa Sissoko and Hojbjerg preferred in holding midfield, Winks is going to see his game time reduce even further with the Europa League group games now finished. His Euro 2021 hopes are in jeopardy.

Surely a loan move to another Premier League side would be ideal for Winks in January.
