Newcastle United started their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 loss to Arsenal.

Steve Bruce’s first competitive game in charge ended in defeat thanks to a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang goal, and the Magpies will hope to bounce back against Norwich City.

There is still a lot of negativity around the club given the events of the summer, but despite the hate for Mike Ashley, the club brought in five new first-team signings – Joelinton, Allan Saint-Maximin, Emil Krafth, Jetro Willems and Andy Carroll.

In the eyes of former Newcastle midfielder Jermaine Jenas some of those ‘can score goals’, but when asked about the quality of Bruce’s squad the 36-year-old name-dropped two others as potential difference makers.

He said, as quoted by The Chronicle: “Elsewhere they’ve got some decent players.

“What can you get out of Jonjo Shelvey this year? Will he finally wake up and realise how talented he is? The boy Almiron they brought in looks like he could light the place up when he gets on the ball.”

TBR’s view

Almiron and Shelvey are certainly two excellent players, whom many are expecting big things of this term.

£70,000-a-week midfielder Shelvey (Spotrac) is the team’s creative spark, and Almiron is a real livewire whose dribbling is going to cause panic amongst opposition defenders.

Joelinton and Saint-Maximin in particular have arrived to a lot of hype, but they are embarking on their first seasons.

Shelvey and Almiron, more so the former, have Premier League experience and the talented duo can definitely help the newbies settle in.
