Jermaine Jenas nailed his early-season concern for Tottenham

Jermaine Jeans raised his concern for Tottenham’s right-back position at the beginning of the season, something which he was clearly right to do so.

Pundit and ex-Spurs midfielder Jenas spoke about the right-back position after just one Premier League fixture of this season had been played.

It’s turned out that his concern for the full-back area was spot on and it’s been an ongoing issue all campaign.

“I am more worried about the right-back position after losing Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid because Pochettino does not seem to have much faith in Kyle Walker-Peters and things have not worked out for Serge Aurier,” Jenas told BBC Sport on 16 August 2019.

After selling Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid last summer for £20million (BBC), it meant that Spurs went into the new season needing a new first-choice option at right-back.

Serge Aurier has been effective going forward this campaign with seven assists in 33 appearances, but his defensive displays have been really poor at time and he is often rash with his challenges.

The North London club started the season with Kyle Walker-Peters in at right-back, but he failed to live up to expectation and was shipped out on loan to Southampton in January.

Meanwhile, Japhet Tanganga, Juan Foyt, Davinson Sanchez and even midfielder Moussa Sissoko have been seen covering the troubled position at some point during the season.

Mauricio Pochettino didn’t really have the answer at right-back before he was sacked midway through this campaign in November and current boss Jose Mourinho hasn’t fared much better since.

It’s clearly an area that needs addressing in the next transfer window and signing a top-class right-back should be a priority.
