Jermaine Jenas made a comment about Tottenham Hotspur after Newcastle United’s Champions League exit last night.

Speaking after Newcastle’s disappointing 2-1 defeat to AC Milan on Wednesday evening, the former Tottenham midfielder commented on Spurs’ chances of Champions League qualification.

Ange Postecoglou’s men currently make up the top five and sit four points above Eddie Howe’s side after beating them on Sunday.

Newcastle dropped out of Europe altogether last night as they were unable to build on Joelinton’s first-half stunner at St James’ Park.

It leaves the Magpies needing to secure a top-five finish to be in with a chance of qualifying for the competition once again next term.

And Jermaine Jenas feels it would have been a decent opportunity for Newcastle to play in the Europa League this term due to the likes of Tottenham pushing for a top-four spot.

Speaking on TNT Sports, Jenas made a point about Tottenham while explaining why dropping to the Europa League could have been a blessing for the Magpies.

“It’s one of them because if there is a top five that get the Champions League, great,” the pundit said. “But if you are in the Europa League then that gives you another chance.

“I think with the competition that is going to be coming from other clubs around them for that position Aston Villa, Spurs, Manchester United might come back into it.

“There’s loads of teams battling it out for those Champions League places so I think Europa League would have been good for them.”

Tottenham certainly look to be in contention for Champions League qualification this season, despite a dip in form last month.

Postecoglou’s men have been hit with significant injuries and suspensions over the past few weeks but seem to have come out the other side now.

Newcastle have also been impacted massively by injuries and that played a key role in their Champions League exit.

Howe will be hoping to get some of his key players back over the coming weeks as Newcastle can focus their efforts on the league once again.

The competition for a Champions League spot is stern this season and Newcastle will have to rediscover their best form to keep pace with the likes of Tottenham and Aston Villa.
