Newcastle United nearly broke Liverpool hearts yesterday evening. The Toon Army were in full voice as Rafa Benitez’s side pushed title-chasing Liverpool all the way at St James’ Park.
Despite eventually losing 3-2, Newcastle can be proud of their efforts throughout the game.
One player who came in for special praise was striker Salomon Rondon. He scored Newcastle’s second goal of the game. Speaking on Match of the Day yesterday evening (04/05/2019) former Newcastle midfielder Jermaine Jenas was full of praise for the Venezuelan.
“Rafa will be hugely proud of his team, and hugely proud of this man, Salomon Rondon. He occupied the whole back four making really selfless runs putting that back four under enormous amounts of pressure.
“This (his goal) on his left-foot is brilliant. Absolutely brilliant finish. Completely warranted.
“He was unfortunate to be on the losing side.”
TBR’s View
Rondon had a fantastic game and Dejan Lovren, in particular, did not look comfortable around the fired up striker.

It will do his chances of a permanent move to St James’ Park no harm.
The Venezuelan is currently only on loan at the club, in a deal that saw Dwight Gayle go the other way.
The Baggies will undoubtedly want to keep Gayle, their player of the season. Newcastle however, will have some reservations over Rondon. He turns 30 in September and is hardly prolific in front of goal.
But this display was near unplayable. If this is what he can offer there is no doubt that Newcastle should consider making his stay at the club permanent.
