Jermaine Jenas hammers Arsenal board and one Gunners player, but praises supporters

Jermaine Jenas has told BBC One’s Match of the Day (Sunday, 10.40pm) that the mess at Arsenal board level filtered onto the pitch on Sunday as The Gunners suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at The Emirates.

A Kevin De Bruyne masterclass saw City ease to three points in north London, without having to get out of second gear. The Belgian ace scored two excellent goals – one with either foot – while also laying on an assist for Raheem Sterling.

It was a hugely disappointing day for Freddie Ljungberg, who had come into the match after beating West Ham last week. Mesut Ozil, meanwhile, was guilty of being “petulant” as he sulked while being substituted – before kicking his gloves.

Former Tottenham midfielder Jenas believes the “mess” upstairs is now beginning to show its face on the pitch, claiming he felt sympathy for Arsenal’s players – other than Ozil, who he believes was wrong to sulk and needed to “get off the pitch”.

“I felt sorry for the Arsenal players,” Jenas said. “Whatever is happening at the top end, the board and the hierarchy. That mess has filtered onto the pitch. They had no direction or confidence.
“Fairplay to the fans that stayed, because it was almost as though they felt sorry for the players. From what I’ve seen from Ozil – he’s always a scapegoat because of the size of the player – but at 3-0, he shows petulance and kicks his gloves. Get off the pitch.”

TBR’s view – What do Arsenal need to do?

For Arsenal, it is simply the need of a new, experienced manager. One that can excite the Arsenal players again, and bring the best out of underperforming players such as Ozil, Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang.

The Gunners need an experienced boss, one that can sort out the defence – which is all over the place at the moment. They also need a boss with the calibre to put Ozil in his place, and get the players wanting to wear the shirt again.
