Jermaine Jenas explains battle Tottenham fans will have with Jose Mourinho

Jermaine Jenas has told BBC’s Match of the Day 2 that he believes Tottenham Hotspur fans will have an ongoing battle with manager Jose Mourinho over Portuguese manager’s style of play – after Sunday’s win over Arsenal.

Goals from Son Heung-min and Toby Alderweireld cancelled out Alexandre Lacazette’s stunning opener, with both sides hitting the woodwork throughout. An equal game, but a clash of styles.

Spurs looked to frustrate Arsenal, enjoying just 37% of the ball throughout the match. Switching to a 4-4-2, Mourinho seemingly outclassed Mikel Arteta in terms of tactics – though he did it in a very non-Spurs way.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, Tottenham dominated possession and looked to control matches but Mourinho is renowned for his counter-attacking, solid style. Jenas discussed the change in tactics on Sunday evening.

“This is going to be the battle that the fans have with Jose,” Jenas said. “You look at the performance and there were times where you thought, I’m not enjoying this.

“You’re used to seeing Tottenham on the ball. He wins big games. It’s not always pretty, but he’s been brought in to win some silverware and this is how he’s going to get the job done.”

TBR’s view – Spurs fans must get used to Mourinho’s style

Having endured a difficult spell for the last 12 months, if not more, Spurs fans are desperate for results and silverware. Yes, it seems as though they would prefer Pochettino’s style – but trophies are more important.

If Mourinho’s way is more likely to achieve results, then surely Tottenham’s fans – who have had to endure a lack of silverware for many years – would take any style if it meant they could finally hold aloft a trophy.

The reaction to Tottenham’s win on social media proved that. Spurs fans celebrated the win over their rivals, rather than complaining about the style which led to three points. Mourinho is not going anywhere for the time being.
