Jermaine Beckford has told Sky Sports News (Friday, 11:50) that he believes Leeds United star Eddie Nketiah will be piling the pressure on manager Marcelo Bielsa to give him a start ahead of Saturday’s clash against Derby County.
Bielsa has so far preferred 26-year-old Patrick Bamford up front, using the former Chelsea ace as his focal point. Bamford has netted four league goals in seven outings, including a brace against Wigan Athletic.
But Arsenal loanee Nketiah continues to come off the bench and shine. The England Under-21 international has netted two important Championship goals, scoring against Brentford and Barnsley when Leeds had struggled to make the breakthrough.
Leeds icon Beckford believes England Under-21 international Beckford will be putting pressure on his manager to finally give him a start in the Championship – but believes the right decision is to keep Bamford in the starting eleven.
“He’ll be chomping at the bit.,” Beckford said. “He’ll be putting pressure on the manager, perhaps there are other areas of his game where he might need to improve. Over the next month I could seew Nketiah breaking into the team. But I don’t see how you can change it.”
TBR’s view – Bamford needs to score, or Nketiah will start for Leeds
Yes, Bamford offers more than just his goals to Leeds, while Nketiah is more of a fox-in-the-box and offers little else in terms of build-up play. Bielsa is renowned for his tactical analysis and that is seeing him prefer Bamford.
But the pressure is ramping up on Bamford and if he is to keep his confidence at a high level, he needs to score goals. A lack of confidence, and his belief will simply dwindle – making Nketiah the better option.
