Jermaine Beckford has told Sky Sports coverage of Leeds United’s win over Barnsley that his old side must make signing defender Ben White a top priority – with promotion to the Premier League all but secured.
The 1-0 win over Barnsley has seen Leeds climb to five points clear of West Brom and six ahead of third-placed Brentford. With two games to go, Leeds need a point to secure promotion and a return to the top after 16 years.
They could even gain promotion without kicking another ball, if West Brom fail to beat Huddersfield on Friday evening. Premier League football looks more than likely to return to Elland Road next season.
It promises an interesting summer. White has arguably been the club’s best player, along with Kalvin Phillips and Pablo Hernandez, but whether Leeds can sign him permanently remains to be seen. Beckford has had his say.
“I would say absolutely,” Beckford said, when asked if Leeds should sign White permanently. “I think he’s been phenomenal this season for Leeds United. I don’t think there’s been many, if any, better centre-halves than him.
“He controls the game really well. He’s physical player, he’ll put his foot through the ball when he needs to, but he’ll also calm the play down, and he’ll pick out beautiful passes. I would say make that signing him number one priority”.
TBR’s view – Can Leeds tempt White into permanent deal?
Signed on loan from Brighton last summer, White was unknown and had only played as high as League One for Peterborough United. Fast forward 12 months, and pundits have touted him to be an England international.
The Sun claim he is rated at £25million, with other Premier League sides interested. Should White join Leeds? He needs game time with a team that fit his style, rather than joining a top-six side and sitting on the bench.
Leeds, of course, are ideal. But there are plenty of other, more-established Premier League clubs are just as perfect for White this summer.
