Jermaine Beckford compares Leeds forward Patrick Bamford to Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins

Jermaine Beckford has made a comparison between Leeds United centre-forward Patrick Bamford and his Aston Villa counterpart Ollie Watkins.

Bamford was a regular starter last season for the Yorkshire giants during their promotion from the Championship and he’s retained that position in the top-flight.

He’s started the new campaign in great form, scoring three goals and supplying two assists in the opening five league games.

The 27-year-old left-footer has been moulded into a striker with an immense work-rate that constantly runs the channels and doesn’t stop pressing, a style under manager Marcelo Bielsa that has seen Leeds light up the division so far.

Meanwhile, Villa are the only team in the top-flight with a 100 per cent win record still and have started with four consecutive victories to sit second in the table.

Villa’s 24-year-old forward Watkins has also begun with three goals in the league, as well as netting two in the Carabao Cup.

He was signed from Brentford for £28million (BBC) in the summer and he’s found his shooting boots for his new club quickly, as well as slotting into the system well with his movement in the final third.

Beckford has made a comparison between the two strikers:

“Ollie Watkins has been on fire. Not only the hat-trick against Liverpool, but his overall game play as well,”  Beckford Doing A Leeds podcast (21 October).

“He offers Villa something not that dissimilar to what Patrick Bamford offers us, in terms of his work-rate, his hold-up play and he’s a goal threat as well.

TBR’s View:

Both Bamford and Watkins have made quick starts after coming up to the Premier League this season, but it’s the Villa man that would just have the edge when it comes to a face-off.

After failing to crack the top-flight in the past, Bamford has surprised many with his individual start to the campaign and there is no doubt that he’s a perfect fit for the Leeds system which is getting the best from him.

Watkins has a similar level of energy about his game, but is definitely a more accomplished finisher that has more composure around the box and perhaps has a higher ceiling of potential that he can reach.
