Jermaine Beckford has told the Doing A Leeds podcast that a £10million buyback clause was going to be inserted in Leeds United’s move to sign Michael Cuisance from Bayern Munich – for a reported £20million.
Cuisance, 21, had broken into Bayern Munich’s first team on occasion last season – even scoring a stunning left-footed effort against Wolfsburg. The France under-21 midfielder was expected to join Leeds earlier in the window, on a permanent basis.
The Daily Mail have claimed that Leeds were close to agreeing an £18million deal only for the Whites to pull out of a deal after a medical. The examination showed lasting effects from a previous injury. He has recently signed for Marseille on loan.
Ex-Leeds man Beckford has claimed that he is glad a move did not go through, claiming Bayern had inserted a £10million buyback clause in the deal – despite Leeds spending double that to sign him.
“Looking at the deal and the way it was structured, we were paying £20million, they inserted a £10million buyback,” Beckford said. “That doesn’t make any sense. That says you are trying to get him back on the cheap. Something like £10m, it was half.”

TBR’s view – Leeds still lacking a midfielder
The failure to sign Cuisance will be turned into a mistake if the French ace goes on to shine at Marseille. Under Andre Villas-Boas, there is every chance he could impress – especially with Marseille qualifying for the Champions League.
The Whites could still be in the market for a central midfielder, but they would have to bring in a player from the Championship. The likes of Norwich’s Todd Cantwell have been linked, but it looks unlikely that Leeds will make a signing before Friday.
