Kalvin Phillips scored the only goal of the game on Saturday afternoon as Leeds United earned a narrow 1-0 win over Birmingham City at Elland Road – and Jermaine Beckford and Mirco Antenucci have responded to his Instagram post.
Phillips, 23, scored his first goal of the season for the Whites as he joined the counter attack high up the field. Jack Harrison won the ball back superbly, before picking the perfect moment to feed Phillips.
The midfielder slotted the ball under the grasp of goalkeeper Lee Camp to secure all three points, in another match that Leeds dominated but could not provide the lethal touch inside the penalty area.
In what was the game that marked the club’s 100th-year anniversary, Yorkshire-born Phillips was fittingly the hero and he posted on Instagram after the match – claiming it was “about time” he scored a goal for his boyhood club.
Phillips was superb at the base of the midfield for Leeds once again, as he continues to draw attention from the Premier League. Aston Villa were heavily linked with Phillips, but the midfielder has since signed a new deal with Leeds
A whole host of current and former players reacted to Phillips’ post, most noticably former Leeds strikers Beckford and Antenucci. The latter wrote “amazing”, while Beckford applauded the finish.
Phillips replied to Beckford, stating he wants to “be like” Beckford.
