Leeds United could really do with Jermaine Beckford’s goalscoring antics right about now. The Championship side are struggling to find the goals that might take them to the Premier League, with Patrick Bamford misfiring and new recruit Jean-Kevin Augustin lacking match sharpness.
It certainly seems that the former Elland Road hero would be up for the task.
Beckford, who announced his retirement from football in August last year after his most recent club Bury went bust, was talking to talkSPORT ahead of Leeds’ crunch clash with Brentford at Griffin Park.
He again admitted how hard it was to leave Leeds for Everton in 2010 and suggested he has been jokingly hinting at a new Leeds deal with club chairman Andrea Radrizzani.
“(Leaving Leeds was) painful, that’s why I keep trying to get a new contract every time I see the chairman.
“From the first week that I signed for Leeds, I said to myself. ‘Wow, this is where I want to end my career.’
He went on to discuss his continued returns to watch his former club at Elland Road, stating:
“I just can’t get enough of the place, I can’t get enough.”
TBR’s View
Of course, Beckford is retired and there is no chance of an Elland Road return but the Leeds faithful would absolutely kill for a striker with Beckford’s predatory instincts at present.
The frontman scored 85 goals in 152 games for Leeds and that sort of lethal finishing is what Leeds are seriously lacking this season.
Hopefully, Bamford and Augustin can soon emulate Beckford’s scoring antics in West Yorkshire, and fire Leeds back to the Premier League.
