Jermain Defoe suggests he wants permanent Rangers move

Jermain Defoe has suggested, in comments reported by the Evening Times, that he is keen to look at a permanent move to Rangers and has held some talks with Steven Gerrard about his future.

Defoe has proved to be an inspired loan signing for the Gers. He has scored 14 league goals since January. In total, he has scored 17 goals in 33 games for the Light Blues.

His record is particularly impressive given that he has started in just 17 of those games. The Englishman has proved to be the perfect rival for Alfredo Morelos, and it would be no surprise if many of the Ibrox faithful were hoping to see the striker stay beyond the end of the season when his loan deal expires.

And it appears that it is not just the supporters hoping for an extended stay. Defoe suggested that he is keen on remaining with Rangers and has already spoken with Gerrard about what the future holds.

“I have spoken to the manager and he knows how much I have enjoyed my time here” Defoe said, as reported by the Evening Times.

“I said to one of my friends recently that I haven’t been here that long really but the appreciation from the fans is something special. You don’t always get that. You get it if you score goals, but I feel like the appreciation in a short space of time.

“I sat down and had a relaxed chat with the gaffer. Even last season when I wasn’t in the team, he told me to be patient and keep doing what I was doing.”

It would be a fantastic statement if the Gers could keep Defoe. He is one day shy of his 37th birthday, and yet, he looks as though he could carry on for a number of years yet.

Wages may prove a stumbling block. Spotrac suggests he is on a £65,000-a-week contract with Bournemouth. But if Rangers and Defoe can agree terms next summer, it looks to be a real no-brainer for the Gers.
