Jermain Defoe slams West Ham player for ‘not being ready’ against Tottenham, has a word of advice for him

Former West Ham striker, Jermain Defoe, was far from impressed with what he saw from current Hammer Michail Antonio today.

The West Ham striker blew a golden chance for the Hammers to bring the game level against Tottenham, as he snatched at a volleyed chance to ensure Spurs walked away with the three points. Two goals from Heung-Min Son and an own goal from Kurt Zouma did the damage to David Moyes’ side.

And Defoe, who was in the Sky Sports studio watching the game today, lamented Antonio for his miss and had a word of advice for him.

“It’s a big chance. Look at him, he’s leaning back. If he just gets over the ball and hits it into the ground more, he might score. It’s a big, big chance. Ian Wright always used to say to me, ‘be ready for your chance’. And that chance could come in the first minute, or the 90th minute, and he (Antonio) didn’t seem ready today,” Defoe commented on Sky Sports.

TBR’s View: Antonio Not At The Races For West Ham

It’s been a long old season for Michail Antonio and there is an element of him running out of steam a bit you feel.

Gone are the lung busting runs he was producing earlier in the season, and at the same time, the goals have dried up a lot as well. Sure, Antonio is still working hard and doing his best for the team, but he did miss the big moment in the game today.

If Antonio takes that chance, then West Ham are well in the game. It’s safe to say Jermain Defoe would have fancied his chances, and the comments about what Wright told him back in the day are a nice nod to some sound advice.
