Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min earned praise from Spurs cult hero Jermain Defoe for his goal on Monday night.

Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs charges returned to the top of the Premier League table by running out 2-0 winners over Fulham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Son opened the scoring in the 36th minute. The Spurs ace curled home after Micky van de Ven cut out Calvin Bassey’s poor pass.

Tottenham led 1-0 at half time, and Defoe told the Premier League website how well he felt the Spurs captain took his goal.

Defoe noted how Son has mastered letting the ball run across his body to get an extra yard ahead of having a shot.

“I don’t think Fulham have made it easy, Spurs have had to work for it,” he said. “But when the chance came, it’s an amazing finish.

“What Son does really well is let the ball run across his body to get an extra yard. You know what he’s going to do, he’s mastered that finish.”

Maddison went on to make it 2-0 in the second half, Son teeing him up to slot home after another Bassey pass was cut out.

Son Heung-min going from strength to strength for Tottenham

Son has well and truly stepped up to the plate for Spurs this season.

Ange Postecoglou has made the £190,000-a-week star (Spotrac) his captain and also moved him into the centre-forward position.

Son has been excelling on both fronts. He’s leading the team well and is also getting goals and assists on board.

The reward for all of Tottenham’s good work so far is evident in their spot at the top of the Premier League table after nine games.

Spurs fans should – and no doubt will – be buzzing by just how well things have gone for them so far, on multiple fronts.

Obviously it’s still very early in the season, but the foundations are there and Tottenham are certainly on the right track for a potentially very successful campaign.
