'Brilliant today': Jermain Defoe blown away by 'really sharp' Tottenham player against Southampton
Jermain Defoe has been singing the praises of Tottenham winger Dejan Kulusevski, after the Swedish ace started the season in fine style.
Kulusevski scored one and made another as he helped his Spurs team to the perfect start against Southampton yesterday. Despite going 1-0 down to a James Ward-Prowse volley, Spurs fought back and scored four goals, without both Kane and Son getting on the act either.
Of course, Kulusevski was key and with Son and Kane not quite at their brilliant best just yet, it was important he got the job done. And speaking of his performance, former Spurs strike ace Defoe admitted he was blown away by just how good Kulusevski was.
“Really sharp today. Thought his overall performance was brilliant. Really direct, goal and assist on the opening day is the perfect start. He took his goal really well, you know, just used the defender and instead of just hitting it hard, just caressed it into the corner. His whole performance today was brilliant,” Defoe said on Premier League productions.
Kulusevski has made that third spot alongside Kane and Son his own since signing in January. Despite Antonio Conte spending big on Richarlison this summer, the Swedish winger is expected to be a first-choice for some time yet.
TBR’s View: Kulusevski Rises To The Challenge For Spurs
There’ll be so many times this season when it is Kane or Son doing the business for Tottenham. But on the days that they aren’t quite at their best, then players like Kulusevski need to step up.
He did just that yesterday and it was no wonder Defoe was singing the praises of Kulusevski in the end. He seems to be an even better player than we saw from January onwards, and his goal was superb.
If ‘Kulu’ can continue this form, then Tottenham fans are in for an exciting season this time around.
