Jermain Defoe has told the Mennie Talks podcast that he is confident Tottenham Hotspur are capable of winning the Premier League title this season – after a point against Chelsea on Sunday saw Spurs return to the summit.
Jose Mourinho has got Tottenham playing much more solid defensively but brutally effective on the counter attack. Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are both in the form of their lives – with Kane having a hand in 24 goals already.
Sitting pretty in the last eight of the Carabao Cup and about to ease into the knockout rounds of the Europa League without getting out of second gear – Spurs have made an excellent start to the season, as they sit in first.
But having only played a quarter of the season, Mourinho’s men will do well to keep up their title challenge when in previous seasons under Mauricio Pochettino – the north Londoners have died off. Defoe gave his verdict.
“Look at the results, of course they can,” Defoe said.” It’s not me being biased, I’m just looking at performances – and they’ve got Mourinho. People can say what they want, but anything can happen. I see a trophy coming, anyway.”
TBR’s view – If Spurs are to mount challenge, what do they need?
A replacement for Jan Vertonghen at centre-back is absolutely crucial. A left-sided centre-back that can also add cover on the left side of the defence would ease a big hole at the back – despite the form of Eric Dier.
Borussia Dortmund’s Dan-Axel Zagadou has been linked with filling that void and while he has massive injury concerns, a signing such as that could massively boost Tottenham – say Dier or Toby Alderweireld get a big injury.
Considering their depth, though, Spurs have internationals in every position, plenty of depth, leaders, experience and pure quality. They have all the tools required to win the title – but time will tell.
