Jermain Defoe has delivered an exciting verdict on new Rangers signing Kemar Roofe in an interview with STV, claiming the English ace impressed Defoe during his time at Leeds United.
Rangers confirmed Roofe had signed a four-year deal at Rangers following a £4million (Mail) move from Anderlecht earlier this week – just 12 months after Roofe had left Leeds for the Belgian side, to play under Vincent Kompany.
Like many players under Marcelo Bielsa, Roofe suffered numerous injuries in his immediate spell after the Argentine. It limited him to just 16 appearances for Anderlecht, though he did scored seven goals and create three.
Roofe is available to face St. Mirren on Sunday and with Alfredo Morelos edging closer towards the exit door, Roofe could even start. Defoe – who is sidelined with a hamstring issue – stated he is excited at the signing of Roofe.
“I remember watching him at Leeds and he really impressed me,” Defoe said. “I’m delighted we’ve got someone like that, I just want to achieve something special here.
“The demand, you have to win trophies, that is something I crave. When new players come in to strengthen the squad, for me it is exciting as hopefully it will lead to something special.”
TBR’s view – Is Roofe good enough to replace Morelos?
Yes, Morelos can score goal after goal and his strength an ability to rile up opposition defenders is second to none. But since the turn of the year, Morelos has struggled to score on a regular basis.
But his technical abilities have been questioned in the past, and his weight is now in question. Roofe is an excellent addition and will certainly score goals at the top level – so Rangers need to sell, and give Roofe a chance.
