Jermain Defoe has told Sky Sports’ The Football Show (Monday, 09:45am) that he believes Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos can score goals at any level, if he finds the right team – amid reports that Newcastle United are interested.

Morelos, 23, has been in stunning form this season – scoring 29 goals in 46 appearances, as well as laying on 10 assists. Now a fully-fledged Colombia international, Morelos has been linked with a move to the Premier League.

The former HJK Helsinki striker does have some questions marks surrounding his recent form, though. Indeed, Morelos has failed to score since the turn of the year in the Scottish Premiership – and his ill-discipline is an area that needs improvement.

Asked about Morelos future amid Goal claiming Aston Villa, Newcastle, Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester and Crystal Palace are keen on the £13million-rated South American, teammate Defoe responded by stating he could play at any level.

“He’s really impressed me. He is a natural goalscorer. People need to understand he is still young, this season, he improved a lot. Yes he makes mistakes, but he is still young. He’s funny in the changing rooms and he is a character,” Defoe said.

“Sometimes he is just here on his own, so it is difficult for him. I feel like he needs to be in the right team, a team that creates chances. He’s arrogant. He can score goals at any level, if it is the right team. In the right team, he will score.”

TBR’s view – Morelos has all the tools necessary for the Premier League

But Defoe is right. Morelos needs to be in a side that are more than capable of creating chances. Under Steve Bruce this season, Newcastle have been much more focused on the defence – and that has seen Joelinton struggle.

However, with an imminent takeover edging closer to completion, Newcastle could completely change their complexion in terms of style. With a more advanced-thinking side, Morelos could thrive on Tyneside.
