Jeremie Frimpong says former Liverpool target could be even better than Dominik Szoboszlai at free-kicks

Jeremie Frimpong believes one of his former Bayer Leverkusen teammates could be better than Dominik Szoboszlai at free-kicks.

Szoboszlai scored an “incredible” free-kick to secure a 1-0 win against Arsenal at Anfield before the international break.

The 24-year-old has established himself as an important player for Arne Slot this season, with his impressive performances at right-back.

Liverpool are still deciding on who will be the established free-kick taker at Anfield after Trent Alexander-Arnold departed the club for Real Madrid this summer.

Following Szoboszlai’s phenomenal 32-yard free-kick, which claimed the three points over Arsenal, the Reds players were asked to name the best free-kick they have witnessed live, and Frimpong overlooked his Liverpool teammate.

Jeremie Frimpong cannot decide between Alex Grimaldo and Dominik Szoboszlai

When answering the question on the club’s official YouTube channel, Frimpong said he couldn’t decide between Szoboszlai and Alex Grimaldo.

“Yeah, I’ll probably say Dom’s. Oh, that I’ve seen live? Grimaldo as well. Back in Leverkusen, his free-kicks are – it’s between Dom and Grimaldo.”

According to a 2018 report from Portuguese news outlet A Bola, as relayed by TEAMTalk, former Reds boss Jurgen Klopp contemplated activating Grimaldo’s €60 million release clause when he was at Benfica.

Of course, Liverpool had signed now vice-captain Andy Robertson from Hull City the year prior, and he established himself as one of, if not the, best left-backs in world football.

New left-back Milos Kerkez has endured a turbulent start to his Anfield career after Arne Slot substituted the Hungarian during the first half of the win against Burnley on Sunday.

The 21-year-old was booked by referee Michael Oliver for simulation before giving away a cheap foul on the halfway line, which led to Slot removing Kerkez from the match over fears of going down to ten men at Turf Moor.

However, Szoboszlai could not recreate his effort at Anfield when he stepped up to take another free-kick against Burnley, and now perhaps Florian Wirtz could stake a claim to become the new set-piece specialist.

Florian Wirtz can rival Dominik Szoboszlai to take free-kicks

Wirtz left Liverpool supporters in awe as he responded to recent criticism with a sensational free-kick of his own during international duty with Germany.

The Reds’ £116m man has struggled to hit the ground running in the Premier League but has found himself on corner-taking duties at the beginning of the season.

Indeed, the question mark surrounding who will assume free-kick taking duties is a welcome problem for Slot to have; there have not been this many options from dead-ball situations for as long as one can remember.

Trent found the back of the net from free-kicks on several occasions throughout his Anfield career, but was never as consistent as, say, Philippe Coutinho once was. If either Szoboszlai or Wirtz can replicate how efficient the Brazilian was at Anfield, then Slot will have another weapon to add to his overflowing arsenal.
