Jermaine Jenas has told Match of the Day that Jurgen Klopp showed his class during Liverpool’s stunning 9-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday as the Reds boss was seen putting an arm around Scott Parker.

Any doubts over the Reds were put to bed in emphatic fashion against the Cherries. Liverpool were back to their scintillating best at Anfield.

Both Luis Diaz and Roberto Firmino scored twice. Meanwhile, the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil Van Dijk, Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho also got on the scoresheet.

Of course, the result sees Liverpool equal the Premier League record for the largest win. It would have been particularly satisfying for supporters after a lacklustre start to the campaign.

‘Understand what Scott Parker is going through’

However, some would have also felt a little sympathy for Parker. The result was a humiliation for the Cherries. And it further highlighted the challenge ahead of the club if they are going to stay in the Premier League this season.

Klopp clearly felt that it was important to offer some words of encouragement. The Liverpool boss made his way over to Parker during the game to put his arm around the Englishman and console him. And Jenas lauded Klopp for that gesture.

“I thought this element here from Jurgen Klopp was a touch of class to be honest with you. He’d have been in that situation as a young manager himself and understand what Scott Parker is going through,” he told Match of the Day.

Jurgen Klopp showed his class

Klopp does get a lot of criticism from outsiders. And some of that does seem justified. Rival fans will often poke fun at the German should he wheel out the excuses after a poor performance – though it must be noted that he is not the only manager to do that by any means.

But there are a number of reasons why Klopp is one of the most highly respected coaches in the world today. Obviously, the success his sides enjoy on the pitch is one.

But he is also an empathetic character who would have understood exactly what Parker was thinking.

Liverpool did their talking on the field on Saturday. There was no need for Klopp to add to the misery. And, as it turns out, he potentially made the afternoon a little easier for Parker to come to terms with.
