Jenas claims Tottenham player was back to his best vs Aston Villa

Jermaine Jenas has told Match of the Day 2 that Son Heung-Min was back to his best as Tottenham Hotspur beat Aston Villa on Sunday.

Spurs have relieved some of the pressure on Nuno Espirito Santo. They beat the Villans 2-1 in North London to move themselves back into the top-half of the Premier League table.

Neither goal was scored by Son. But the South Korean played a key role in both efforts, setting up Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for the opener.

And it was his ball across the six-yard box that was turned in by Matt Targett as Lucas Moura threatened to pounce.

It was a reminder as to why Son is arguably the only player who can rival Harry Kane for the role of Tottenham’s talisman.

And Jenas suggested that Villa were unlucky to come up against a Son that no side would have been able to deal with this weekend.

“He’s back to his best. I was critical of him last week in the North London derby along with a whole host of other players in the starting XI,” he told Match of the Day 2.

“But when he plays like that, he’s unstoppable, he really is. The things he does down that left-hand side for Tottenham, he’s a goal threat, he creates things. And it’s almost like when he’s on it, the rest react.”

Bright Harry Kane display in Tottenham win suggests Jenas is right with Son claim

Kane is still awaiting that first league goal of the season. But there were unquestionably some much more promising signs against Villa.

He came close to beating Emi Martinez from 45 yards in the first-half. And that was not the only time that he nearly ended that drought.

That perhaps backs up Jenas’s point about the impact Son can have on those around him.

And it makes sense. If the defenders know that they will have to contain Son, it is going to be more difficult to also cope with Kane.

Nuno has not silenced all of his doubters with the victory. But there are certainly some more encouraging signs heading into the next stage of the season.
