Jeff Stelling has named the two Manchester United players who managed to impress him during their 3-1 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.
Erik ten Hag‘s side gave the champions a good scare at the Etihad Stadium. Marcus Rashford scored an unbelievable goal in the early stages. And there were signs that it may not be City’s day, with Erling Haaland missing an open goal from a couple of yards out during the first-half.
But ultimately, Manchester City’s quality shone through. Phil Foden produced another masterful performance to help get past a United side which defended extremely well for much of the game.
Jeff Stelling praises Manchester United pair despite Manchester City defeat
Rio Ferdinand was impressed by Andre Onana’s display in goal, suggesting that the summer signing was brilliant all day.

But speaking on talkSPORT, Jeff Stelling suggested that the displays of both Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes really caught his eye.
“I thought Dalot played well. And I thought Bruno Fernandes played well. In that false nine, obviously, he was involved in the Marcus Rashford goal as well. And I thought he did his absolute utmost to drag the United team right throughout,” he said.
Performance may not silence all skipper’s critics
Dalot has played well for much of this campaign, so it was not entirely surprising that he had a good game.
The praise for Bruno is a little more surprising. In fairness, the Portuguese did seem to step up. But obviously, the Manchester United captain has come in for a lot of criticism during the last couple of years.
Questions could still be asked about whether he is the right man to be the club’s skipper. He does not appear to be someone who inspires those around him with his actions.
However, he is one of the outstanding players in the current Manchester United squad. And he showed some of that quality in Sunday’s game.
