Jeff Stelling amazed by how 27-year-old Tottenham player has stepped up this season

Jeff Stelling has shared what has impressed him most about Guglielmo Vicario following the goalkeeper’s move to Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window.

Stelling was speaking on talkSPORT (11/12; 6:38) after Spurs got back to winning ways with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Newcastle on Sunday.

Guglielmo Vicario will be disappointed that he did not keep a clean sheet in the game. But he will be a lot happier to have had a much less eventful evening after recent results.

In fact, the most significant moment involving Vicario probably came at the end of the game when he seemed to get involved in a little row with Callum Wilson.

But there is absolutely no question that Vicario has been something of a revelation since his arrival in the Premier League in the summer. Certainly, Jeff Stelling has been a big admirer of the 27-year-old this season.

“You know what’s impressed me about him most is that when he was in Italy, he never really played for a big club but he’s stepped into that position at a big club and he’s done it as if he’s been playing for big clubs all of his life! He’s been brilliant,” he told talkSPORT.

Transfer proving a masterstroke

Stelling will not be the only one taken aback by the goalkeeper’s form. James Maddison recently admitted that he had not heard of Vicario before he was linked with Tottenham in the summer.

But he has quickly established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League this season.

He appears to perfectly suit the style Ange Postecoglou wants his team to play. And while he does make the occasional mistake, he has also been responsible for some outstanding moments.

Certainly, Spurs’ decision to sign him for £17 million in the summer is looking like a masterstroke. While one side of North London faces constant questions over their goalkeeper signing, Tottenham appear to have found a player who could be a stalwart for years to come.
