Jeff Shi says he made a signing at Wolves who was even worse than Fabio Silva

Wolves have made some brilliant signings in recent years under Fosun’s ownership.

Say what you will about the way Wolves have been run in recent times, but during this era, some incredible additions have been made.

Matheus Cunha was a great signing, hence why Cunha got a move to Manchester United, while Ruben Neves, Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez were also transformative additions.

Unfortunately, not every signing has been a home run for Wolves.

Fabio Silva was highly-rated before signing for Wolves, but he’s been an expensive flop, while Goncalo Guedes didn’t make the desired impact at Molineux either.

Speaking on the Business of Sport Podcast, Jeff Shi has been discussing Wolves’ worst signings, and he picked out who he believes is the worst signing he’s made at Wolves.

Jeff Shi names his worst Wolves signing

Shi was asked which player he wouldn’t sign again with the benefit of hindsight.

While players like Fabio Silva have been a waste of money for Wolves, according to Shi, Patrick Cutrone has been his worst signing at Molineux.

“Who did you buy that was a benefit of hindsight you wouldn’t buy again?” Shi was asked.

“Maybe the worst deal is Patrick Cutrone. So, we bought him in the third season or whatever, then yeah, but his character was not suitable for UK. So, I think maybe his style of play may be more for Italian football,” Shi said.

Patrick Cutrone’s stats for Wolves

Patrick Cutrone had some decent moments for Wolves, but, as Shi says, overall, he wasn’t good enough.

Indeed, the striker’s stats for the Midlands club tell the entire story here.

Three goals in 28 games as a striker is an utterly terrible return, and it’s clear what the problem was here.

Shi says that this was a matter of Cutrone not having the right character for English football, and that’s something that should never be underestimated.

We’ve seen tons of strikers from Serie A flop in the Premier League, and sadly, there does seem to be a disconnect in terms of strikers arriving in England from Italy and not performing.
