New Leeds United signing Jean-Kevin Augustin has plenty of pedigree and has joked on Instagram that after inviting Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy to Elland Road – he tried top convince the French defender to sign for Leeds.
Augustin, 22, has become Leeds’ newest player but watched on from the stands on Tuesday night as Leeds came from behind to beat Millwall 3-2. At half-time, the scoreline read 2-0 to Gary Rowett’s Millwall.
Mendy, a £52million (BBC) signing for Man City in 2017, has a huge tie to Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa after working alongside the Argentine at Marseille. It is believed his time under Bielsa pushed him to become one of the world’s best left-backs.
Mendy has also crossed paths with Augustin in France’s Under-21 side, and after being invited as a guest to Elland Road to watch the Whites return to the top of the table – Augustin joked on Instagram that he tried to convince Mendy to sign.
TBR’s view – Augustin becoming a favourite among Leeds fans
When Leeds completed the signing of Augustin, it was expected that the France Under-21 international was always likely to become a favourite. Fans desperately wanted a striker, and they got one with enormous calibre and pedigree.
But what has endeared himself to Leeds fans is his activity on social media. Many footballers, these days, have companies to look after their accounts. But Augustin clearly looks after his own and is more than willing to interact with fans.
Much like Allan Saint-Maximin at Newcastle, Augustin is willing to crack a joke – shown in his “no more likes” Tweet after joining Leeds. Such activity has already made him a favourite, even though he is yet to make his debut.
