Jay-Roy Grot must build on weekend goal or end up on Leeds United scrapheap

In 2017, Victor Orta and Thomas Christiansen’s recruitment saw plenty of unknown faces arrive at Leeds United. Whilst the recruitment for the current campaign involved mostly players with Championship experience that summer was far more experimental.

One such arrival was that of Dutch attacker Jay-Roy Grot. He joined the club from NEC Nijmegen in August 2017, in a deal reportedly worth £1.5 million.

It was, however, a tough first season at Elland Road.

The young forward managed just one goal and one assist in 22 appearances for Leeds. With that in mind, he was loaned back to the Netherlands in the summer. Grot joined VVV Venlo on a deal until the end of the season.

It has been an up-and-down campaign. His form has been flakey but he has also been in action for the Dutch under-21 side.

At the weekend, Grot scored his first goal for the club since October. The winger found the net in a 4-2 win over ADO Den Haag. If he wants to have any future at Leeds he now needs to build on that momentum.

It was only his third goal of the season but if he could push on to double figures before the end of the campaign then Leeds might have to take another look at him. If not, then the Elland Road scrapheap awaits.
