Tottenham Hotspur are said to be interested in signing West Brom striker Jay Rodriguez this summer. The Burnley Express reported this week that Tottenham are now looking into the signature of the Baggies striker before Thursday’s transfer window closure.
Tottenham, who have failed to make a single signing so far this summer, are believed to want better back-up for striker Harry Kane this season.
It seems a deal that could happen. He would likely be affordable. Mauricio Pochettino is also a big fan of the player. Rodriguez played the best football of his career under the Argentine’s guidance at Southampton, before injury problems set him back.
But a move for ‘J-Rod’ would certainly have similarities to the deal that saw Fernando Llorente arrive last summer.
The Swansea City striker seemed on his way to Chelsea before Tottenham appeared out of nowhere. They swooped in on deadline day and signed the Spaniard for a fee in the region of £12.1 million.
But it looked like a panic buy. Tottenham had failed to identify and target the perfect back-up to Kane, following the failure of Vincent Janssen the year before.
Llorente hardly did any better. The Spaniard managed just one league goal for Spurs last season.
A move for Rodriguez would seemingly be another panic buy from Tottenham. It could work out if they did make the move. But after Llorente last season, Spurs hopefully won’t do it again.
