Mexico pulled off a World Cup shock yesterday evening, defeating reigning champions Germany 1-0 in Moscow through a Hirving Lozano goal. It was an incredible performance and result from the Central Americans, who thoroughly deserved all three points from their tremendous display.
One man who was particularly good was Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez. The Mexican striker put in a fine display as Germany were put to the sword.
Operating mostly in a solo role up-front he had Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels chasing him around the Russian capital. For West Ham fans it was a brilliant sight.
This World Cup has been cruel to the Hammers and their new boss Manuel Pellegrini so far. Talismanic midfielder Manuel Lanzini suffered a knee injury in Argentina training which will keep him out of action until 2019.
But seeing Hernandez putting in such a brilliant performance will no doubt impress his new boss. Pellegrini will be hoping to get more out of Hernandez than his predecessor David Moyes managed. Last season the Mexican struggled and did not look the player West Ham fans hoped he would have been.
However, he showed for Mexico against the world champions what he can do when he has the belief and backing of his manager.
If Pellegrini can get Chicharito playing like he did v Germany at the London Stadium next season, then West Ham will feel like they have a new signing at the club.
