Jasper Gronkjaer has told Goal that he believes Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek would be more suited to Premier League clubs Tottenham Hotspur or Chelsea – rather than Spanish giants Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Van de Beek, 23, has been on fire for Ajax again this season – having a hand in 21 goals during his 37 league and cup appearances for Ajax, scoring 10 and creating 11. Football London claim Tottenham have made enquiries.

It is believed that Ajax rate van de Beek at a fee of £47million, as per Football London’s report. But more recently, Le10Sport has even claimed both Newcastle United and Everton are considering a move for the Netherlands international.

Former Chelsea and Ajax winger Gronkjaer spoke about van de Beek’s future – given that the midfielder has also strongly been linked with Real Madrid and Barcelona. However, the Dane reckons van de Beek would be better suited to Chelsea or Spurs.

“I wouldn’t be surprised to see him at Real Madrid or Barcelona but I would rather see him at a club just below that,” Gronkjaer said. “For his style of play alone, clubs like Tottenham or Chelsea would be a better fit.

“They are still top clubs and he is more like Frank Lampard, that kind of player. He is a big guy, box-to-box and takes good long shots, but he is not as technically gifted as other Ajax players. He is a player you can always get a certain level from.”

TBR’s view – Van de Beek a top signing for Chelsea or Spurs

But both clubs must be wary of giving van de Beek time to adapt. Little time was afforded for Davy Klaassen at Everton, and the criticism got the better of the former Ajax star. A similar player to Klaassen, van de Beek requires patience.

To go from facing the defences of the Eredivisie to the best league in the world is a big step up. Van de Beek has shown he is capable of impressing in the Champions League – even scoring against Spurs.

A top player and a top signing, but if he does move to the Premier League, he needs time.
