Former Liverpool star Jason McAteer believes midfielder Fabinho is now one of the very best holding midfielders in the world.
The Brazilian has made a brilliant start to the 2019/20 season, featuring in the vast majority of games for the Reds so far.
The former AS Monaco man is one of the first names on the teamsheet these days, and has become a firm fans’ favourite at Anfield.
Last term the ace was instrumental in the team’s Champions League success and club-record points haul in the Premier League.
McAteer, who spent a few years at the club in the late 1990s, lavished praised on the South American.
He wrote for The Racing Post: “The role of the holding midfielder has developed in modern times and Liverpool boast one of the best in the business in Fabinho.
“He just gets it, gives it and doesn’t do anything flamboyant, though it took him a while to learn the role. His awareness of danger is fantastic. He and N’Golo Kante at Chelsea are the two best players in the Premier League playing that role and he’s definitely one of the final pieces in Jurgen Klopp’s jigsaw.”
TBR’s view – Fabinho now crucial to the Liverpool way
Fabinho has become an absolute colossus for Liverpool in the space of the past year, and is making his £43.7 million transfer fee (Telegraph) look like a total bargain.
With Chelsea’s Kante playing more box-to-box these days, it is difficult to pick someone who holds a candle to Fabinho at the moment.
He is an incredible shield for the defence, but also possesses fantastic (progressive) passive attributes.
