Jason Cundy makes confident statement about Tottenham in Champions League

Jason Cundy has claimed that Tottenham could have a chance of winning the Champions League this season and feels they would need a kind draw.

Spurs reached the final of Europe’s elite club competition last season under Mauricio Pochettino, before eventually losing to English rivals Liverpool.

They did get the better of Ajax, Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals to reach the final.

Spurs, who now have Jose Mourinho in charge, have qualified for the knockout rounds of the competition once again.

The North London club beat Olympiakos 4-2 on Tuesday night to seal their spot in the last-16 of this season’s Champions League.

Ex-Spurs defender Cundy is optimistic about his former’s side chances this campaign of going deep into the competition again and Mourinho has previously won it twice.

“There is no reason why Spurs can’t win it (Champions League) I said that this time last year that Spurs once they got out the group all you need is a kind draw,” Cundy told talkSPORT.

“If the draw is kind there is no reason why Spurs can’t get to the final, we saw it last year. Same group of players with a manager that knows how to navigate his way through this competition. This team is good enough they are a good team Spurs.

TBR’s View:

Spurs achieved heroics on their run to the Champions League final last year and it’s surely a massive long shot for history to repeat itself again the next season.

They have had to make a managerial change midway through the campaign due to the poor performances and Mourinho’s main focus has to be to try drag his side up to the top four spots in the Premier League.

After receiving a 7-2 humiliation against Bayern Munich earlier in the group stages, it shows there are some brilliant teams vying for Europe’s top club prize.

Mourinho has been a serial winner as a manager during his career, but surely even he can’t realistically thing his team can win the Champions League straight away.

They should strive to go deep in the competition and enjoy facing elite opponents, but there is plenty of work to be done.
